Meet Dr. Jacob Iveland Au.D.
Dr. Jacob Iveland joined South Bay Hearing in September 2019. Although he is not from the South Bay, he has lived in California for three years prior (two years in San Francisco and one in San Diego). Dr. Iveland is originally from a small town of around 12,000 people in Minnesota called Saint Peter; around 100 being in his immediate family. Ever heard of “Minnesota Nice”? If not, don’t worry. An appointment with Dr. Iveland will show you that “Minnesota Nice” is a real thing!
Hearing loss runs in Dr. Iveland’s family and he himself was diagnosed with a moderate to severe inner ear hearing loss at the age of three, which is when he received his first pair of hearing devices. The audiologist that diagnosed him lived just two blocks away. He had a huge influence on Dr. Iveland, instilling in him a passion about helping people hear. His childhood audiologist/mentor was in attendance when Dr. Iveland was awarded his doctorate degree. After that ceremony Dr. Iveland was gifted a hand drawn picture of the inner ear that his childhood audiologist drew 40 years ago during his audiology training. That picture hangs in Dr. Iveland’s office.
Dr. Iveland studied at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. During his time in Minnesota he interned for two of the world’s five major hearing device manufacturers (GN ReSound and Starkey). He also volunteered at Northern Voices, a center for deaf and hard of hearing children between the ages of six months to six years, which allowed children to learn verbal communication and listening skills before entering mainstream education.
In 2016, Dr. Iveland took a big leap across the country and moved to San Francisco to obtain his doctorate in audiology at the University of the Pacific. During his training he rotated through a private hearing device practice, a VA hospital, Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, UCSF Benioff Children’s hospital, and a large Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery practice. His residency was completed in San Diego at a busy ENT office where he became passionate about implantable hearing devices called cochlear implants (CI) and bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA).
When Dr. Iveland is not seeing patients he is likely somewhere traveling. In June of 2019 he set out on a three month solo backpacking journey visiting six different states, twelve European countries, and he even ran with the bulls at the historic Running of the Bulls celebration in Spain. He took over 7,000 pictures and loves giving recommendations to those who are considering a trip in the future. Aside from traveling, Jacob loves beach volleyball, trivia nights at a local brewery, playing card games, watching Netflix/HBO, strumming his guitar, and playing kickball.
As one of the premier hearing centers in Torrance, CA, South Bay Hearing also provides high quality hearing services to patients in Redondo Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Manhattan Beach, Carson, Lomita, Hermosa Beach, and Harbor City, CA.
